Now for something peaceful

I have to collect firewood, rather than do some job that I have no idea what is the point, which I hate, and from which I am completely alienated,” he said. “Everything in my life feels full of meaning.”

The Secret to Happiness?

David Brooks writes;

If the relationship between money and well-being is complicated, the correspondence between personal relationships and happiness is not. The daily activities most associated with happiness are sex, socializing after work and having dinner with others. The daily activity most injurious to happiness is commuting. According to one study, joining a group that meets even just once a month produces the same happiness gain as doubling your income. According to another, being married produces a psychic gain equivalent to more than $100,000 a year.

If you want to find a good place to live, just ask people if they trust their neighbors. Levels of social trust vary enormously, but countries with high social trust have happier people, better health, more efficient government, more economic growth, and less fear of crime (regardless of whether actual crime rates are increasing or decreasing).

Photo of the Day

Art of the Day- The Farm

Miró painted his farm from the farmer’s point of view, as seen by someone who knew every pebble and leaf, every pigeon and coop, every bucket and seed. It is, like all paintings but a little more directly than some, a picture of human striving.

Bureaucratic Creativity

From a GAO report;
We found that maintenance staff sometimes devise creative solutions, such as the system that the maintenance staff at one site we visited set up to funnel water from a roof leak into a water bottle that then directs the water to a drain. This solution stopped the water from further damaging the building and leaking into areas occupied by staff while deferring the cost of correcting the problem.

Photo of the Day

The “fig leaf” pose (hands coupled and held in front) as exhibited here by Joe Biden, Larry Summers, and others; the “toy soldier” pose (hands stiffly at sides) as exhibited by William Donaldson (far left); what looks to be the “hands-in-pocket” pose, by Paul Volcker, to the immediate right of the podium; and, although you can’t see it in this photo (I saw it in another photo of the event that I can no longer locate), the “firing squad” pose (hands behind back) exhibited by Bob Rubin, who in this photo is mostly hidden behind Biden.

But the real outlier here is Rahm Emanuel, hands on hips, eyes scanning the room, looking ready to intervene in any way necessary.
